CHIEF, WIFE, JENNY AND HER SON PERFECT WERE AT THE SITTING ROOM DISCUSSING WHEN MIMI WALKED IN WITH HER CIGARETTE, MAKING SOUNDS WITH HER CHEWING GUM.

MIMI

Hi (referring to all of them and going straight upstairs without looking back)

CHIEF BENSON

Young lady! Where do you think you are going to?

MIMI

I’m here to see Jeff, so I am going to his room

MRS BENSON

What is wrong with this girl? What kind of family did you come out from? Is that how you talk to your parents?

MIMI

Excuse me! Don’t insult my family, please.

JENNY

Hey! Hey!! Hey!!! You dare not talk back at my parents. Get that into your head or I will teach you a lesson you will never forget in a hurry. How dare you!

CHIEF BENSON

Now, let me make it clear to you for the last time, I don’t want you to ever step your feet into this compound again. Now, get out!

JEFF

What is going on here, what sort of embarrassment is this. Why are you intimidating my guest? (as he was stepping down from the staircase)

MRS BENSON

Your guest? You call this thing your guest?

CHIEF BENSON

Listen to me young man; I don’t want to ever see this girl in my house again. Do I make myself clear?

JEFF

Let’s get out of here (referring to Mimi, so angry with the whole situation)

MRS BENSON

Jeff, come back here, Jeff …..Come back here…

CHIEF BENSON

Do you see the type of girl your son is hanging out with? Is this the kind of woman he wants to bring in here as a wife?

MRS BENSON

God forbid! That girl can never be my daughter In-law…..

JENNY

Calm down mum, my brother is not even ready for anything marriage

MRS BENSON

That’s not possible! Is he still a child? Honey, I think it’s high time we talked some senses into that boy (referring to chief)

JENNY

I have to go now. Perfect come on, let’s go, your dad will soon be home

MRS BENSON

And why didn’t he come with you now that he’s in the country?

JENNY

He will be going back to UK in few days’ time. So he’s been running around to finish all his appointments, but I am sure he will see you guys before going back

CHIEF BENSON

He better do. I have a lot of things to discuss with him, so tell him to see me

JENNY

Okay daddy. Bye mum, bye dad.

SOPHIA PICKED AN IPHONE 8+ WHILE CLOSING THEIR SHOP FOR THE DAY. SHE TRIED OPENING IT BUT IT HAD A FLAT BATTERY.

SOPHIA

Someone must have misplaced this. OMG, it seems the battery is down. I have to take it home to look for a way I can charge it. Wow! What a beautiful phone (she was admiring the phone), I know the owner must be worried by now. (she left)

CHIEF AND HIS WIFE WALKED INTO JEFF’S ROOM TO TALK TO HIM

JEFF

Mum, dad, what’s up with this midnight visit? Hope all is well (He was surprised)

MRS BENSON

Son, sit down. I and your father want to talk to you. (he sat)

CHIEF BENSON

Jeffrey my son, we have to stay up this late waiting for you to come back, because we needed to have a serious conversation with you. You see, you’re our only son and we love you so much, we want nothing but the best for you. You are not getting any younger; almost all your mates are married with kids. We’re not asking for too much, just for you to bring a responsible lady home as a wife.

MRS BENSON

My dear, just as your father has rightfully said, we need a responsible, respectful woman. It’s very obvious that you can’t marry that girl, called Mimi. We want to see your wife as soon as possible.

JEFF

Mum, dad, I’ve heard what you said, but you have to give me some time. Marriage isn’t something you go into with someone you barely know, so I need time to find the woman.

CHIEF BENSON

Jeff, you don’t have time. I don’t have time. We’ve given you enough time already. You’re no more a boy. When I married your mum, I never knew her, it was a family friend that told my parents about her parents, and today we are happy as a family. You don’t need 100years to know a good woman. When you see one, you will definitely know. So think about it and get back to us as soon as possible. Good night son.

SOPHIA AND ANNE WERE ON THEIR WAY TO WORK WHEN SOPHIA BROUGHT OUT THE IPHONE DIALING A NUMBER.

ANNE

Sophia, don’t tell me you’re insisting on giving this iPhone back to the owner. The owner didn’t even know it was misplaced in our shop. From the look of things, it’s obvious the owner of this phone must be a very rich man/woman who doesn’t even need it. Do you know how much you could make if you sell this phone?

SOPHIA

Anne, I’m not a thief. I picked this phone and I am giving it back to the owner simple. I saw a number saved as ‘my other number’ on the phone, I just pray it’s the owner’s other number…(the phone rang) hello good morning………..good morning ma…..….please do you know the number I am calling with?………ok, can you describe the phone?……..exactly….…ok. I saw it in our shop yesterday, but the phone was off, so I have to take it home….….yes, I just switched it on now…….you’re welcome ma, so please come to A2Z supermarket to pick it up……my name is Sophia…………no problem ma, bye (she hung up). Wow! She sounded so excited (referring to Anne)

ANNE

You tried. You can see that she has another phone, maybe that one is even bigger and finer than this iPhone. Weldon madam good Samaritan. Your parents would have named you ‘Goodness’ instead of sophisticated. You’re the nicest person in the whole world (praising her sarcastically as they approached their shop).

THERE WAS A GENTLE KNOCK AT CHIEF’S GATE, IT WAS AS IF THE PERSON WAS TRYING NOT TO WAKE PEOPLE UP. CHIEF AND HIS WIFE HEARD THE KNOCK AND DECIDED TO COME AND SEE FOR THEMSELVES. THE GATE MAN PEEP TOED AND OPENED THE GATE LOOKING VERY SUSPICIOUSLY, A VERY FAT LADY WITH BIG FRONT AND BACK ENTERED. THE GATE MAN WHISPERED SOMETHING TO HER, AND THEY BOTH PEEP TOED, GOING INTO THE MAIN HOUSE. THE GATE MAN WAS LEADING THE WAY UNTIL A VOICE SHOUTED AT THEM AND THEY STARTLED.

CHIEF BENSON

Stop right there! Abu! What’s going on here? Who’s this lady? And where are you both going to?

ABU

Walahi oga, na my name I be fat, na me I be small oga gal prend, I say make I bring am por inside. I …..(English stranslation: truthfully sir, her name is Pat, she is Jeffrey’s girlfriend. He said i should bring her inside….)

CHIEF BENSON

Will you shut up your mouth, what rubbish are you saying? Young lady, who are you and what are doing here?

MRS BENSON

Open your mouth and talk. Are you deaf and dumb?

PAT

My name na Patricia, but my friends dey call me Pat for short. Na me be Jeff girlfriend, I …. (Mrs Benson cuts in)

MRS BENSON

What!!! God forbid, not my own Jeff. (She rushed to Abu and started hitting him) So this is what you do eh? Bringing stupid girls into my house for my son, you are leaving this house this minute.

ABU

Dan allah, kiyankuri oga madam, walahi tor lahi na devil work, me I get am por flenty childrens, kayankuri oga, I no get am por anoda job (English translation: please ma’am, It’s the work of the devil, I have many children. Please sir, I don’t have any other job…kneeling down, crying and begging both Chief and Mrs Benson when Jeff came out)

JEFF

Abu is not going anywhere! This is not his fault.

CHIEF BENSON

My friend shut that thing you call a mouth. So you still have the audacity, the impetus to talk? Before I close my eyes and open it, I want the two of you to disappear from this compound (pointing at Abu and Pat, as they were both running out, he called Abu to stay back and gave him serious warning, never to do something like this again. Turned and angrily went into his house and his wife followed suit)

JEFF

Abu! Ordinary small job as this, you cannot do. Just to bring a woman into my room. My friend, go and lock that gate.

CHIEF BENSON WAS HAVING A DRINK IN HIS COMPOUND, READING A NEWSPAPER WHEN JEFF DROVE IN. HE GREETED HIS FATHER AND HEADED TO THE HOUSE BUT CHIEF CALLED HIM BACK

CHIEF BENSON

Son, please come…….sit down I want to have some words with you

JEFF

Dad, I hope there’s no problem (he sat down)

CHIEF BENSON

Jeff, I and your mother discussed something with you some days ago and up till now, we’ve not heard anything from you.

JEFF

Dad please, if it’s about the marriage thing, I am not in the mood for that now, moreover, I told you guys to give me some time.

CHIEF BENSON

And what have you done with the one you were given? Apart from carrying different kinds of women, partying and drinking all night. For how long are you going to continue like this, Jeffrey? You’re my first child and my only son. The mantle of leadership of this family and my business empire will soon fall on you, is this how you will manage it? Tell me! (he shouted angrily at him)

JEFF

Chief, Sir Benson Williams, I’ve heard all you said and I’m working towards that. As you can see, I’m just coming back after a long day, very tired and needs to rest. We will continue this conversation some other time, dad. (he stood up and left).

Writer’s note: You don’t have to be wealthy or from a wealthy family before you can be good to others or show an act of good gesture. Let it be part of you.

Spread goodness anywhere you are, no matter  how little.

Do not allow negative people around you to influence you with their negativity.

Always stand on your ground, whenever, you are sure that you are putting a smile on someone’s face.

Mimi loves Jeff so much that she can’t have a little respect for his parents.

Whose fault is it? Do you think Jeff has respected his parents enough in Mimi’s presence?

Let me say this as it just dropped on my mind now.

The way you package and present your family is exactly the way others will treat or react to them.

If you down talk your family members, your parents or siblings in the presence of your spouse or fiancé, don’t feel bad when they in return begin to disregard or disrespect them. You layed that foundation.

Whose iPhone do you think Sophia picked up? Do you think she will really return such an expensive gadget?

Do you think Jeff will go ahead and marry Mimi irrespective of his parent’s disapproval?

Hope you’re enjoying and learning something at thesame from this story, because, I am.

Stay tuned for the next episode, dropping in two days time. I can’t wait to see what happened next.

Till we meet again.

Much love from me to you.

Share is love. Remember to always share our posts with your friends and families, even your enemies. They might learn one or two things there too.
